EDF and Pod Point have announced an overnight electric vehicle (EV) charging tariff of just 7.4p/kWh which it says is “the UK’s cheapest EV energy tariff.”
From yesterday (24 October) the partnership will allow customers using the Pod Point Exclusive tariff to charge their EVs at an overnight charging rate of 7.4p/kWh between 00:00 and 05:00 when they switch to EDF as their energy supplier. This rate, which the EV charging provider claims is “the cheapest overnight rate” in the UK, will be fixed for one year alongside a “competitive” as yet unspecified daytime rate.
This claim is based on annual Ofgem typical usage of 2,700kWh peak EV charging usage and 2,000kWh off-peak (~8,000 miles).
Comparing the average peak and off-peak rate of the Pod Point EV Exclusive tariff for customers with a smart meter, paying by direct debit, with the average peak and off-peak rate rates of EV specific tariffs from other suppliers that do not require control of vehicle or charger (such as Intelligent Octopus Go), Pod Point produced the following results.
Supplier | Off-peak rate (/kWh) | Annual Bill Estimate |
EDF’s Pod Point EV Exclusive | 7.4p | £1,177.43 |
ScottishPower EV Saver | 7.45p | £1,334.80 |
Octopus Go | 9p | £1,188.51 |
British Gas Electric Driver Oct24 | 9.4p | £1,178.47 |
Eon Next Drive | 9.5p | £1,275.56 |
Customers that ordered Pod Point’s Solo 3 home charger after the 18th October will be eligible for the tariff but will also be required to have a smart meter installed.
“We know consumers are most likely to charge their cars overnight at home, making sure that – just like the mobile phone on their bedside table – it is ready to go when they need it, whether that’s for the school run or the morning commute,” said Andy Palmer, CEO at Pod Point.
“This tariff will make home EV charging more affordable for thousands of households across the country, whilst still providing a competitive peak rate to deliver the overall cheapest EV tariff.”
