Heathrow Airport has announced that it is to install 135 additional chargers for electric vehicles (EVs) in an effort to boost the number of clean energy vehicles used on and around the site.
The installations form part of a series of initiatives being employed at the airport to reduce emissions and improve its environmental credentials. The new EV charging points will add to the 21 chargers already on site, which are available to passengers in short-stay car parks free of charge.
A timescale for deployment has yet to be announcement following the funding announcement, with a spokesperson for Heathrow saying the initiative is “in very preliminary stages”.
John Holland-Kaye, chief executive at Heathrow Airport, added: “2015 saw us commit to a series of action plans that will make us a better neighbour, by reducing noise, emissions and traffic. But we know that we need to do more, and in the coming months will set out even more ambitious plans that will make an expanded Heathrow the most environmentally responsible hub airport in the world.”
In addition to the EV chargers already in place, Heathrow Airport also boasts a publically-accessible hydrogen refuelling station while zero-emission vehicles are already being added to its fleet of 400 vehicles.
