A new research by OnePoll, on behalf of Statkraft, showed that 63% of Britons are concerned whether the energy they use comes from renewable sources.
The research shows how British public is concerned about climate change, with three in five people surveyed feeling that the government is putting the pressure on individuals to solve the climate crisis.
This is in contrast with only one in three thinking the government is doing enough to solve the climate crisis. And almost half are convinced that energy companies using fossil fuels are to blame for the biggest contribution in the climate change.
David Flood, managing director of Statkraft UK said: “It can’t be down to individuals alone to tackle the greatest crisis facing the globe, policy action and real systemic change are what’s required to save our planet. It’s vital that Government and businesses drive forward a real energy transformation.”
More than four in five people surveyed are worried about climate change, with a surge in citizens seeing an urgency to fight it. A majority (69%) of them believes it is a personal responsibility to help reduce their climate footprint.
Approval for the rollout of renewable energy is high, with solar power, onshore and offshore wind receiving more than 70% acceptance, whereas nuclear energy is valued positively by just under two in every five people.
Having a solar farm as a nearby neighbour wouldn’t be a problem for four of every five Britons.
The electro intensive industry shares a similar opinion of the British public, with almost all of them (93%) stating they are taking measures to become carbon neutral.
Their next step will be to make this intention into a reality, since so far just under two in every five (38%) stated they already purchase clean energy.
The majority of businesses (88%) are optimistic that they’ll achieve a 55% reduction of carbon emissions by 2030 and become carbon neutral by 2050, in line with EU guidelines.
Flood added: “For the UK to meet its 2050 net zero emissions target, electricity must be generated by proven renewable technologies, put in place today in order to protect future generations.”
