Cars being sold today are nearly seven grammes of CO2/Km below the European Union’s 2015 target, according to provisional data published by the EU Environment Agency.
The figures show that the average emissions of a new car sold in 2014 was 12.34g of CO2/Km, well below the 130g of CO2/Km 2015 target. The environment agency found that cars sold in 2014 emitted an average of 2.6% less CO2 that those sold in 2013.
The figures show that car manufacturers are responding to the 2015 emissions target and will now work towards achieving the 2021 target of 95g CO2/Km.
Diesel cars continue to be the most popular type of car in the EU with 53% of all car sales. Electric vehicle registrations experienced a massive growth in 2014, up 57% from 2013 to 38,000. However, EVs still only represent 0.3% of all new car registrations in the EU. France led the way registering 10,700 EVs, followed by Germany (8,500) and the UK (6,700).
