Octopus Energy’s electric vehicle (EV) roaming service, Electroverse, has launched its Plug & Charge technology to offer it’s customers a simpler charging experience.
The technology emulates the Tesla charging experience which allows drivers to plug their car into a public chargepoint and begin charging automatically – removing cards apps and websites from the process.
A customer’s Electroverse account allows the EV to sync with the chargepoint and begin charging automatically, with all bills handled by Octopus.
According to Octopus, Electroverse’s Plug & Charge technology has already been used by EV drivers with Volkwagen’s iD cars and Cupra Born cars on IONITY’s ultra-rapid chargers across Europe.
Simplifying the EV charging process is a key to accelerating the uptake of EVs in the UK; research published by the payment platform Paythru last year revealed that poor chargepoint experience was deterring 80% of potential EV customers in the UK.
“This Plug & Charge milestone shows how technology delivers better electric vehicle charging. It provides a roadmap for the future of seamless public charging – and we’ve got big plans to roll it out further,” said director of Octopus Electroverse, Matt Davies.
“We’re making it easier for car manufacturers and charging networks to support Plug & Charge and create a simpler experience for EV drivers.”
Last month Octopus also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with EV manufacture BYD to add 5,000 new EVs to it’s salary sacrifice scheme launched in 2021.
