Mobile-based energy supplier Pure Planet has pinched telecommunications firm Three’s chief technology officer to lead its own app development.
Bryn Jones has joined Pure Planet and retained his title as CTO, bringing with him more than 30 years’ experience in consumer technology businesses such as Virgin Media, EE and Three.
He will be tasked with leading the development of Pure Planet’s ‘advanced energy app’, improving its AI-powered customer service system – dubbed WattBot – and its energy tracking system.
App development has emerged as a considerable new area for suppliers, with the majority working on or having recently launched new mobile-based apps to improve their consumer engagement.
Jones said that the energy market has yet to see the kind of multimedia revolution reaped by other sectors, but said Pure Planet was “breaking new ground” with its app-only offering.
“Pure Planet’s ability to make this complex industry simple, to help drive the rapid adoption of clean, renewable energy through an exciting app is what drew me to this young, dynamic company. Energy is essential; and it’s essential it’s clean – and digital,” he said.
Pure Planet launched last year, founded by a team of ex-Virgin Mobile and EE directors bidding to take on the incumbent market with a digital-only offering that supplied energy at wholesale cost.
In May last year the firm’s co-founder sat down with Current± to discuss the firm’s bold plans for the market.
