Following a competitive tendering process, the £41 million low-carbon deployment programme by Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) Distribution, has appointed the Freedom Group of Companies Ltd as the design and build contractor for delivering its net zero investment schemes.
The strategic investment schemes are set to unlock 122MW of additional renewable capacity in the UK and are the result of “close collaboration” between SSEN and energy regulator, Ofgem, alongside other network operators.
The initiative explored the potential benefit early investment in the distribution network could have for bolstering the economic growth of renewable energy, creating green jobs and supporting low-carbon projects.
To this end, SSEN conducted an extensive call for public evidence in 2021 including submissions from local authorities, developers and community groups. The data received resulted in 12 programmes of network investment receiving approval from Ofgem.
The 12 SSEN Green Recovery projects include: a £3 million strategic investment to replace two transformers and 0.3km of underground cable at Constable Street Substation, Dundee; a £2.2 million investment in Dorset to create 7.2MW of extra capacity for low carbon technologies; and three key sites in Hampshire will received a combined £16 million investment to accelerate renewable economic recovery.
Enabling SSEN’s infrastructure to support increasing demand for electric vehicle charging, as well as the electrification of heat, will also be accommodated by the £41 million investment.
“SSEN is delighted to announce the appointment of the Freedom Group of Companies Ltd to assist us in this substantial programme of works across our north and south distribution areas,” said Rikki Wells, green recovery project manager for SSEN’s North distribution area.
“With Feasibility Design nearing completion, we will continue to work together on the Detailed Design and Construction phases that will follow, with a view to all 12 projects being completed by July 2024.”
SSEN and Freedom plan to commence the detailed design and construction phase for all 12 projects in January 2023.
