The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy is to continue to be led by Kwasi Kwarteng following the latest cabinet reshuffle.
However, now ex-energy minister Anne-Marie Trevelyan has moved over to the Department for International Trade, where she is now secretary of state, leaving her spot to be filled by Greg Hands.
Hands is the MP for Chelsea and Fulham, and has previously completed stints in the Department for International Trade as well as being chief secretary to the Treasury back in 2015-16.
On social media site Twitter, Hands said: “Trade was a great role, but so is minister of state at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.
“Energy, clean growth and climate change – some of the biggest challenges and opportunities for the government as we approach #COP26.”
Meanwhile, Kwarteng has held onto his role as energy secretary, having taken over from Alok Sharma in January, allowing Sharma to focus on his role as President of the UN COP26 climate conference full-time.
Sharma became energy secretary himself in February 2020 after a cabinet reshuffle saw Andrea Leadsom – who had only been appointed the previous July – sacked.
Also on Twitter, Kwarteng said he was delighted to have been asked to continue in his role as the government redoubles efforts to “supercharge R&D, decarbonise our economy, catalyse private capital to create new jobs in new industries and revive Britain’s spirit of enterprise”.
