Work is underway to improve the energy efficiency of five rail stations on the Abellio Greater Anglia network following the completion of an electrical upgrade at Buckenham and Haddiscoe stations.
The train operator’s ‘Rewire, Relight’ project will see every lighting unit in station buildings and on platforms at Alresford, Braintree, Brandon, Westerfield and Wivenhoe replaced with more energy-efficient ones. Abellio Greater Anglia expects a 60% reduction in like for like energy usage.
A complete rewiring at each station means that the train operator will install variable controls and automatic settings for the lighting, helping to reduce electricity consumption and improve energy-efficiency, in order to reduce the stations’ carbon footprint.
Work at Buckenham and Haddiscoe rail stations was completed in December 2015 where these measures are already helping to reduce running costs at both locations.
Simon Wilson, programme delivery manager for Abellio Greater Anglia, said: “The Rewire, Relight project helps us to create more energy-efficient stations and, at the same time, improve the station ambience and environment for passengers.”
