Vehicle to Grid (V2G) technology could help to turn a challenge into an opportunity, allowing the growing number of electric vehicles (EVs) in the UK to contribute to grid balancing services rather than constraining the grid. The young technology is yet to become widespread though, so just how much of an opportunity is there for it?
In the world’s largest V2G trial, dubbed Project Sciurus, OVO Energy worked with Cenex, Nissan and Indra to install between 300 and 400 V2G chargers and monitor them over a year starting in 2020. It found that participating in Dynamic Containment could earn consumers up to £725 a year, but hardware costs remain a critical barrier to the uptake of wider V2G rollouts.
On Wednesday 21 July 2021, Current± will chat with Russell to find out more about whether V2G technology is advanced enough, the economic opportunities it provides and the regulatory barriers to its uptake.
