ENGIE is to install 50kW+ electric vehicle (EV) chargers at 19 Asda locations in West Yorkshire as part of a new partnership.
These two car-chargers are to be powered by 100% renewables, with charging free for Asda customers until October.
This partnership is an extension of ENGIE’s existing relationship with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, with over 70 rapid chargers already installed. The Combined Authority secured close to £2 million from the Office for Low Emission Vehicles in 2019, with the installation of chargepoints at Asda stores marking the final phase of the programme.
EV rollouts are occurring at a number of different supermarket sites across the country, with Tesco’s rollout in partnership with Pod Point and Volkswagen – which is aiming to install 2,400 chargers – hitting the milestone of providing the 500,000th free top-up in April.
Other supermarkets include Morrisons, which signed a deal with ChargePoint Services – now owned by ENGIE – to install 50–100kW rapid chargers at supermarkets up and down the country in 2019.
Jerry Maloney, managing director for ENGIE’s Futures business, said: “The provision of rapid electric vehicle charging facilities at Asda stores offers customers a reliable and convenient way to charge whilst they visit the store.”
The rollout forms part of Asda’s commitment to making carbon reduction a priority across the business, having committed to reducing its scope one and two emissions by 50% by 2025, announcing in 2016 it would derive 50% of the group’s energy demand from renewable sources by the year.
