With the recent news that National Grid ESO’s Demand Flexibility Service (DFS) saved over 3.3GWh of electricity throughout the winter period, GridBeyond confirmed its clients delivered a 190MWh demand reduction.
The technology platform confirmed that it had a hand in supporting the scheme by providing its clients with the technological means to reduce power usage during peak times throughout the winter period of 2022/23.
The scheme, which ran from 1 November 2022 until 31 March 2023, had 22 service events which included live events to balance Great Britain’s electricity network. In total, 1.6 million households and businesses signed up.
Octopus Energy’s results for its DFS scheme “Saving Sessions” saw its customers collectively shift 1.86GWh of electricity throughout the 13 trials. British Gas’ scheme saw customers paid over £1.8 million since December 2022, due to saving a total of 147MWh of energy.
Octopus Energy in particular believes the DFS has been a significant success in Britain. In March, Octopus Energy called for the end of the use of coal as a backup energy source due to the successes of the DFS.
“The successful delivery of the DFS programme this winter is a credit to all involved. Not only did it deliver immediate benefits, but it will give a taste of the exciting potential that flexibility can provide as part of a net zero future. At GridBeyond we are delighted to have been involved and support our clients and the wider grid,” said GridBeyond managing director UK and Ireland Mark Davis.
In early November 2022, GridBeyond launched a new energy trading and hedging service to support businesses navigate high costs and manage energy market volatility. The product offers active energy management and trading, helping to optimise a company’s use and assets, to “take businesses from passive procurement to active energy management”.
GridBeyond also secured over £5 million in investments in early October to continue providing smart energy solutions on a growing international scale.
