SMS is to be the first meter installer, manager and operator to offer Aclara’s complete portfolio of SMETS2 gas and electric smart meters to the UK utilities market.
It comes as part of a new agreement between the two companies, having previously worked together on developing three-phase SMETS2 meters for the UK market. This led to SMS becoming the first installer in the country to fit a three-phase SMETS2 device last August.
To date, SMS has installed over 1.5 million domestic smart meters, with the company to deliver a further 2.5 million to UK consumers through its commercial energy supplier agreements.
“Our partnership with Aclara is not just about volume, it is also about delivering real innovation,” Tim Mortlock, chief operating officer of SMS, said.
“As we continue to work together to develop next generation devices for the UK market, our aim is to help energy suppliers and consumers realise maximum benefit from the smart transition through enabling smarter energy solutions, cost savings, and carbon reductions.”
As part of the agreement, SMS is to offer the ultrasonic SciFlo gas meter, a dual-band device which the company said has the potential to unlock around 25% of the total UK housing stock that currently experiences connectivity issues.
Last month, it was revealed the rollout of smart and advanced meters in the UK had hit its latest milestone, with 24.2 million installed in homes and businesses.
It follows a turbulent year for the rollout, with 2020 seeing installations paused as a result of COVID-19 government guidelines before being restarted again that June. Across the year, there was a 27% reduction in installations compared with 2019, with only 1.997 million recorded by ElectraLink.
