The first installation as part of the Liberty Charge project has been completed in the London borough of Waltham Forest.
Liberty Charge – which is a joint venture between Liberty Global and Zouk Capital – is aiming to rollout electric vehicle (EV) charging using Liberty Global’s subsidiary Virgin Media’s network infrastructure, deployment capabilities and relationships with local authorities.
It was the second recipient of funding from the Charging Infrastructure Investment Fund, a government-backed fund managed by Zouk.
Liberty Charge is to install 20 charging points across 10 sites in Waltham Forest, with this figure set to increase to 50 sites as future locations are determined.
More areas for deployment nationwide are to be confirmed during the course of the year as Liberty Charge continues discussions with local authorities.
The chargepoints are to provide access to a charging capacity of up to 22kW and cost EV drivers 30p/kWh to charge. They are to be operated by EV DOT, a publicly accessible EV charging network owned and operated by BMM Networks.
Neil Isaacson, Liberty Charge CEO, said that there are “many challenges” to reaching net zero, with Liberty Charge doing everything it can to ensure “charging infrastructure is not a limiting factor”.
