Glasgow-based Smart Metering Systems (SMS) has signed five new framework agreements with independent energy suppliers.
The contracts will see SMS provide domestic smart meters for suppliers RHE, Green Energy, Flow Energy, Spark Energy and Our Power.
All energy suppliers are required by Ofgem to appoint a meter asset manager to control the deployment of smart meters.
While SMS has not disclosed how many meters it expects to install under the non-exclusive contracts, the five suppliers have a combined customer base of 386,000 homes.
Alan Foy, chief executive at SMS, said that independent suppliers formed part of the fastest-growing segment of the retail energy market.
“We continue to pursue other opportunities for the rollout of domestic smarter meters between now and 2020. SMS is well positioned for this new market segment with a strong track record to date building out our order book in the I&C and domestic markets,” he added.
The government has a long-established target of installing smart meters in every UK home and business by 2020, equivalent to some 53 million meters. As of December last year, just two million had been installed however the deployment programme is expected to ramp up significantly this year.
There has recently been a flurry of activity in the market, with Trojan Utilities landing a £5.5 million contract from OVO Energy and Calvin Capital becoming the main beneficiary of the European Investment Bank’s part-funding of the deployment programme.
