Coffee giant Starbucks has expanded its 100% renewable energy target to include all of its company-owned stores in Europe.
The company had previously committed to sourcing all of its power from renewables in the US, but has now looked to extend that commitment one year on from signing up to the RE100 initiative.
The expansion will see more than 550 company-owned stores across the UK, France, Switzerland and the Netherlands derive their power from renewable sources and Jaz Rabadia, senior manager of energy and initiatives at Starbucks Europe, said the retailer was delighted to add its European branches to the target.
“We are focused on creating stores that are designed, constructed and operated with sustainability in mind, and we understand the importance of contributing to a low-carbon economy.
“We are committed to building on the progress already achieved and will continue working on developing long term relationships with renewable energy providers and generators,” she said.
Starbucks currently engages with various energy suppliers across Europe and says it has identified providers capable of providing it with renewable energy-based tariffs.
Earlier this year Starbucks sought to raise up to US$500 million to pursue global sustainability projects and help it conserve energy across its facilities and company-owned stores.
