UK industry will waste half a billion pounds this winter and emit 7.4 million tonnes of unnecessary CO2 emissions, according to research carried out by Vickers Energy Group.
The energy savings group used real life figures gained from its previous clients over the last decade to calculate the wastage figures. The company claims that by implementing operational changes and boosting energy efficiency it has helped save its customers an average of £18,000 a year.
Vickers’ David Hilton explained: “As a nation we are not proficient at looking at where we can reduce our energy consumption. UK industry could save itself £1.2 billion pounds every year if only it addressed the issue and reduced its carbon emissions.”
The company believes that the mismanagement of heating systems is a particular area of weakness for UK plc – often operating at too high a temperature.
Hilton added: “The situation cannot just continue without any monitoring and we are calling on UK businesses and the government to ensure that there are regulations in place to stop money haemorrhaging out of the economy every day.”
Burnham Nurseries recently invested in an energy management system that will cut its energy consumption by 27%, saving the orchid nursery over £5,500 in energy bill payments. The energy management system regulates and monitors the temperature throughout a number of buildings to ensure that the gas-fired heaters are working at the optimum efficiency.
Sara Rittershausen of Burnham Nurseries commented: “As an orchid nursery, the issues we face in our greenhouses to protect the orchids are quite complex and tackling winter bills can be a daunting prospect. Energy consumption can become a low priority in many businesses but we decided to ‘bite the bullet’ and address the constantly rising costs. An energy management system has been a huge help as it is low maintenance and has cut consumption by 27%.”
