Less than two weeks into the year 2023 and a new wind generation record has been set, with the technology generating over 21.62GW yesterday (10 January).
Although National Grid ESO is waiting to receive all data from yesterday, it has confirmed that the record was broken during the 18:00-18:30 settlement period.
This beats the last record set on 30 December 2022 of 20.918GW, which in turn overtook the two preceding records of 19.936GW on 26 October and 20.896GW on 2 November.
Offshore wind has seen significant investment and backing from the UK Government in recent years, including the British Energy Security Strategy setting a new target of up to 50GW of offshore wind by 2030.
The benefits of wind generation were analysed in a recent study by RenewableUK, which found that wind power could save each household in the UK £250 a year compared to gas. Wind generation was also a major play in making 2022 the second greenest year on record, by producing 26.8% of the UK’s energy, beaten only by gas with 38.5%.
