SSE Energy Solutions’ business arm, Green Electricity and Green Gas, has received its sixth EcoAct verification in as many years, as the number of its business customers using green energy products grew from 6% to almost 30% over the past year.
EcoAct is an independent verification and assurance of a company’s environmental claims and products against the Greenhouse Gas Protocol reporting and quality criteria.
The assurance process constitutes an analysis of SSE’s Renewable Energy Guarantee of Origin (REGO) and Renewable Gas Guarantees of Origin/Biomethane Certificates (RGGO/BMC) product specifications, as well as an evaluation of its REGO and RGGO/BMC balance for the most recent Fuel Mix Disclosure period.
Obtaining an EcoAct verification grants a company’s clients confidence that the green electricity they purchase from that company was generated by renewables. The status also grants businesses additional justification for including zero emissions electricity supply in their environmental strategies.
By conducting an independent third-party audit to assure that SSE’s renewable electricity and gas products are compliant with the GHG Protocol Guidance, EcoAct also allowed SSE and their customers measure and report on their energy use and greenhouse gas emissions.
“The success of the energy transition will depend on the transformation of the energy sector from fossil-based to lower carbon energy sources,” said principle consultant at EcoAct, Gavin Tivey.
“We are thrilled to see SSE Energy Solutions consolidate its business model, based on more green electricity, renewable gas, energy efficiency and more low-carbon smart solutions that work for their clients, whatever stage they are in their journey to net zero.”
SSE has recently developed a number of new green energy products, including placing new fixed-electricity contracts that incorporate 100% renewable electricity, at no extra consumer cost.
The energy provider also implemented a simplified Corporate Power Purchase Agreement (CPPA) to grant a wider scope of customers the opportunity to purchase energy directly from SSE’s renewable assets.
In September 2021, SSE branched into the electric vehicle (EV) space, launching its Green EV tariff, providing business fleets with 100% renewable energy. Since then, SSE Energy Solutions has also embarked on a number of EV partnerships including with Paua and SSE Airtricity.
“Each year a growing number of businesses come to us looking to find out more about green energy and renewables. With a leap of 6% of businesses customers to 30% utilising green energy products in just a year, it is clear to us that our customers are serious about reducing their carbon footprint,” said Mark Keeling, sales director at SSE Energy Solutions.
“We want the process of going green to be as straightforward as possible, and our renewed verification from EcoAct is an important part of that. Having an independent verification from a respected third party like EcoAct means we can help our customers display their environmental credentials with real conviction.”
