The UK is expected to be Europe’s second largest high power charging (HPC) market, with 28,000 installed by 2030.
This is according to new research from Delta-EE, which also found that HPCs are expect to grow 24-fold in the same time frame across Europe, hitting over 100,000. This is up from a base of 4,400 HPCs installed in 2020.
Defining HPC as 100kW+ charging which can result in charging a Jaguar iPace, which has a 90kWh battery, from 10-80% in less than 40 minutes using a 100kW chargepoint, Delta-EE said it has emerged as a trend in the past two years, with growth set to “dramatically accelerate”.
The research firm’s report – the European EV Chargepoint Forecast – there will be 14 million electric vehicles (EVs) on UK roads by 2030, and 8.3 million chargepoints installed.
Of these, 6.1 million will be home chargepoints, with this a slightly higher market share than the European average, being 74% in the UK compared to the 73% average.
However, the report also details how across Europe, around 23% of EV owners do not have off-street parking.
Recent research from British Gas found that of drivers who do not have a driveway or off-street parking, just 7% already have an EV and less than a quarter (24%) are considering switching, while over half (53%) are not considering purchasing an EV at all.
Meanwhile, previously research from British Gas owner Centrica found that local authorities plan on installing only 35 on-street chargers – a solution for drivers without off-street parking – on average by 2025, with 126 councils across the UK having no concrete plans as of January 2021 to install any more EV chargers before the end of 2025.
Delta-EE’s report detailed how the biggest segment growth overall will be in workplace charging, with this being a further solution for drivers who are unable to charge at home.
William van der Byl, EV charging service manager at Delta-EE, said: “While a small percentage of current EV owners don’t have access to home chargepoints, future drivers will be less likely to charge at home.
“In the UK, only two-thirds of houses have off-street parking and so it’s important we continue to develop infrastructure that supports convenient charging – whether this is fast charging through HPCs or offering more workplace charging.”
Earlier this month, Octopus Energy teamed up with Elmtronics to offer a range of EV charging services to business customers with the intention of simplifying what it described as the “daunting” process of switching to EVs.
This new offer includes the supply, installation, back office software and maintenance of chargepoints, with all of this to be fulfilled by Elmtronics.
Meanwhile, in September the Department for Transport opened up the Workplace Charging Scheme to allow small businesses such as B&Bs gain access with an aim of supporting the UK tourism industry and improving access to rural areas.
