Battery EV sales see staggering month with 20k mark broken
Sales of new BEVs surpassed over 21,000 in September, marking a 184.39% increase compared to 2019.
The 21,903 BEVs sold in September account for over a third of the total BEVs sold in 2020, coming in at over one in ten cars sold in the month. This is according to new figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
BEV sales have seen an exceptional year, with each month recording a significant increase compared to the year before. In April, they took home 32% of the market share following sales of new petrol and diesel cars tanking due to COVID-19.
However, the SMMT warned that even with the growth seen in the BEV sector, meeting accelerate ambitions for their uptake will “require government to get behind a truly world-class package of incentives – alongside binding targets on infrastructure to reassure consumers that recharging will be as easy as re-filling”.
Alfen bags deal with the London Borough of Newham
Alfen is to supply 80 EV charge sockets for installation in the London Borough of Newham. Allego is to be responsible for the installation and operation of the chargers, which are to be publicly accessible.
The 40 22kW Alfen Twin Dual Socket chargers will allow cars and vans to charge up to almost 100 miles of range per hour, with the chargers also to offer the flexibility to create smart charging hubs as the network grows, Alfen said.
The project forms part of the Go Ultra Low City Scheme and is a joint Transport for London, Greater London Authority and boroughs project aiming to install over 1,500 EV chargers by the end of this year.
Alex Earl, country manager at Alfen UK, said: “Together with our partner Allego, with whom we have already been working for many years in Europe, we are confident that we will provide a high level of service to EV drivers in London and do our bit to reduce emissions and improve air quality in the area.”
