Centrica has appointed former Conservative MP and energy secretary Amber Rudd as non-executive director.
Rudd held the position of Energy and Climate Change secretary from May 2015 till July 2016, overseeing an important period in the industry that including the closure of the Green Deal.
Centrica, the parent company of supplier giant British Gas, welcomed Rudd to the board, praising her “wide range of expertise”.
“[Rudd] brings a wealth of real-world experience in energy, which will be invaluable as we face the challenge of delivering net zero and helping our customers live more sustainably and affordably,” said Scott Wheway, chairman of Centrica.
British Gas has grown over the past year, taking on over 500,000 customers through Ofgem’s Supplier of Last Resort process in 2021.
This included those from Neon Reef Limited, Social Energy Supply, Simplicity Energy, PfP Energy, MoneyPlus Energy, People’s Energy, Zebra Power Limited and Bluegreen Energy Services Limited, amid a record number of collapses driven by high gas prices across Europe.
