Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks is on the hunt for flexibility providers in the Western Isles and Skye.
The distribution network operator (DNO) has partnered with flexibility marketplace provider Piclo to seek providers capable of alleviating potential network constraints in that region of its network.
SSEN has identified specific areas that would benefit from smarter solutions, placing them on Piclo’s marketplace for businesses, aggregators and communities to tender for contracts.
Specific detail surrounding available contracts is on Piclo Flex, however 30MW is needed for flexibility services commencing October 2019.
These have been separated into three distinct categories, namely Constraint Managed Zone (CMS) Prepare, Respond and Restore, with each providing the DNO with a particular service depending on the constraint.
Stewart Reid, head of future networks at SSEN, said the competition, its first in the Western Isles and Sky, marked a significant step in delivering proactive flexibility in Scotland.
“We are committed to considering flexible options where it is more cost effective than traditional network reinforcement, unlocking new opportunities for local flexibility providers and helping keep costs down for customers.
“We are not dictating a specific solution and I hope to see services range from embedded generation, energy storage, demand side-management and demand side response.”
