The Energy Networks Association (ENA) has appointed Lawrence Slade as its new CEO, as David Smith steps down after 15 years at the helm.
Smith – who joined the ENA in July 2003, and was appointed chief executive in October 2007 – announced that he was to leave the ENA back in March, stating: “After nearly two decades at ENA, the time is right for a change, both for ENA and for me, and I have decided to step down at the end of the year.”
Phil Jones, chair of ENA welcomed the news that Slade was to take up the mantel, saying: “We look forward to welcoming Lawrence to ENA as our new Chief Executive. Lawrence brings with him a wealth of experience in the industry and beyond, which will be invaluable as ENA’s role in leading our sector continues to grow.
“I would also like to thank David for the significant contribution he has made to ENA and, on behalf of the board, wish him every success for the future.”
Slade is currently CEO of the Global Infrastructure Investor Association (GIIA), having joined the membership body in January 2020. Prior to this he was a member of the Government Committee on Fuel Poverty for five years till 2019, and worked first as COO and then CEO at trade body Energy UK for nearly nine years from 2011 till 2019.
He is currently a non-executive director at EV charging company Connected Kerb, as well as being a member of the board of trustees for the St Clare Hospice and a board trustee for the Money Advice Trust.
“I’m privileged to be asked to lead ENA at this crucial time for our industry and thrilled to be back in the energy sector once again,” said Slade.
“This is an important time for the networks as ENA’s members work hard to deliver safe, secure, reliable and sustainable energy supplies during a challenging time for customers. I’m looking forward to supporting our members deliver net zero and ensure the long-term benefits are unlocked for customers and communities.”
Slade is set to take up the role on 20 February 2023. Ross Easton, the ENA’s director of external affairs, will step into the role of interim chief executive until then. He has been working with Smith and the board during the transition period.
