A new proof of concept for vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and vehicle-to-building (V2B) is being launched by Marubeni alongside Origami Energy, Grid Edge, Smartest Energy and Virta.
Having signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the project, the companies are to focus on delivering factual information on power trading using the EVs for flexibility while also considering the use of EVs for mobility, with charging and discharging schedules and time of use.
It is also to focus on peak shifting and shaving using the on-site solar generation and the electric vehicles (EVs).
The project – which is set to last for a year and be located at the Nissan dealership in Letchworth Garden City – is to also run behaviour simulations to account for demand levels, EV usage and other factors that could influence optimal business operations in the future.
This approach will allow the project team to consider appropriate tariff structures and services that account for EVs and behind the meter requirements for businesses seeking a total energy solution, the companies said.
As part of the project, Virta – which described itself as having been a “pioneer” in V2G and other energy management solutions since 2013 – will deliver two V2G chargers alongside an energy management solution for control optimisation of the V2G element.
Stuart Tolley, UK sales director at Virta, praised the “enormous potential” of V2G technology to deliver “major savings – both in financial terms for electricity system operators and vehicle fleets, and in environmental terms, by significantly cutting CO2 emissions across the power system”.
