Octopus Energy and OVO Energy have collaborated with digital banking firm Monzo to allow consumers to switch energy supplier through the bank’s app.
Consumers can now switch supplier to Octopus or OVO in under six minutes on average, according to Monzo.
Quotes are presented through the app after a consumer provides details about their home and type of meter. For a more accurate quote, consumers can also provide energy usage details.
Once a supplier is chosen, the consumer’s information is sent to them and the switch handled by the supplier.
Consumers can also set reminders for when their current contract ends. However, consumers with a prepayment meter or who live in Northern Ireland can’t use the app to switch.
Rebecca Dibb-Simkin, product and marketing director at Octopus Energy said they love partnering “tech innovators like Monzo who are shaking up tired sectors” and that the partnership was a “great fit” due to shared values.
“We’ve been working with Monzo for 18 months to create a way to make it as easy as possible for their customers to switch energy supplier through their app. Ultimately great customer experience works across every channel. We’re delighted to be working with Monzo to give their customers fair prices for the long-term and greener energy with Octopus Energy in just a few clicks,” she added.
Adrian Letts, CEO of retail at OVO Energy said: “We’re delighted to partner with Monzo and join their energy marketplace.
“Digital is at the centre of our offering for customers, and has been right from the start. With more people using smartphones to access everything in their lives, monitoring and controlling your household energy use should be no different.”
Using apps to simplify energy for consumers is not a brand new concept, with the likes of Pure Planet entering the sphere in 2017.
However, Pure Planet has been criticised by Citizens Advice for poor ease of contact due to the energy company being app-only and not having a telephone number despite being contactable through the app.
Testing of energy switching through Monzo’s app began last year, becoming available to the public earlier this week.
