Wokingham-based energy storage specialists, REDT has partnered with energy company, Green Acorn to install an energy storage system in Somerset.
The 5-40kWh liquid energy storage system will be connected to a solar array that is helping power a dairy farm in Somerset. The idea behind the installation of the energy storage technology is to maximise the benefit of the solar-generated electricity by providing the flexibility to shift the array’s peak output to meet the farm’s demand.
REDT points out the recent power purchase agreements (PPA) issued by the distributed network operators explicitly limit the amount of energy projects can export during the day when output is high but demand is low.
The company claims that the energy storage installation will help distance the business from the national electricity network, insulating it from blackouts. While the size of the system installed is not enough to cover the farm’s demand, REDT claims that its energy storage products coupled with local renewables could see the farm become fully independent of the grid.
Commenting on the project, Keith Hounsel, managing director of Green Acorn Energy Solutions, said: “The wider applications of liquid energy storage technology mean that many renewable energy generators, whether retrofit or new installs can seek the benefit of storing excess renewable energy.”
REDT hopes that the new project will serve as a showcase for liquid energy storage technology. The company estimates that agricultural storage market in the South West alone is worth 1GWh.
