UK energy market data operator ElectraLink has published data that shows 212,000 smart meters were installed across Great Britain in March, a month-on-month increase of 17%.
However, the company also reported that the total installation figure is 5% down from March 2022.
“Smart installations tend to drop off during the festive period and start to boost again in Spring with peaks towards the end of the year. Monthly installations recorded in 2022 largely mirrored trends from 2021,” ElectraLink explained.
According to recent data from Cornwall Insight the UK is on course to miss the government target of achieving 100% smart meter coverage by 2025.
Although Cornwall Insight’s data covers the whole of the UK, while ElectraLink reports on only Great Britain, the drop in year-on-year installations suggests that smart meter installations are not increasing quickly enough to meet targets.
In total, 577,000 installations have taken place in 2023, while 20.3 million smart meters have been installed since the rollout began.
The data in the report was provided by ElectraLink’s Data Transfer Service Operations Team which “is based on the D0150 data flows transmitted across our network and we believe capture the vast majority of electricity smart installs,” according to the company.
According to data from the UK government, “at the end of 2022, 31.3 smart and advanced meters were in homes and small businesses across Great Britain; 55 percent of all meters are now smart or advanced meters, with 28.1 million operating in smart mode.”
