Conrad Energy has energised a 25MW/50MWh battery energy storage site (BESS) in Blackpool.
The site is connected to Electricity North West’s (ENWL) 33kV network and has been energised following pre-commissioning and functional testing of the safety critical features of the plant.
“When operational, the project will support the energy transition by both solving the problem of matching intermittent energy supply with varying grid demand and by providing essential ancillary services such as Dynamic Containment, Dynamic Regulation and Dynamic Moderation,” said Steve Conry, chief operating officer of Conrad Energy.
Once fully operational the site will be handed to the company’s in-house O&M team, to begin trading power into markets. In April 2022, Conrad Energy acquired flexible power software provider TGG Solutions, to further develop its in-house optimisation abilities.
The company is continuing to build out its BESS portfolio in Britain and at the beginning of February signed an agreement with Close Brothers which is to provide £85 million in funding for eight BESS projects across the UK.
Additionally, this month the independent power producer gained planning permission for a 15MW site, while in September 2022 it was granted permission for a 50MW BESS in Somerset.
