National Grid ESO’s latest frequency service Dynamic Moderation (DM) is set to go live today (6 May).
The first auction will take place at 14:30 on the EPEX platform, with the first delivery of DM taking place from 23:00 tonight, until 23:00 tomorrow (7 May).
Auction results for DM – which is designed to manage sudden large imbalances between demand and generation – will be visible later this afternoon on the ESO Data Portal.
It follows the launch of National Grid ESO’s Dynamic Containment and Dynamic Regulation services, together making up a new suite of frequency response services.
Further developments of the trio are expected to take place throughout the remainder of the RIIO-2 period, and will be shaped by stakeholder engagement.
These will “help us reach our ambitions of competition everywhere and operating a zero-carbon system,” the ESO stated.
Dynamic Regulation went live on the 8 April 2022, and is a pre-fault service designed to correct continuous but small deviations in frequency.
Dynamic Containment went live in October 2020 and provided a boon to battery energy storage operators in the UK, as its high initial price of £17/MW/h boosted the revenue stack of storage assets.
It was first called into action less than 24 hours after it was launched, when an interconnector tripped while importing 1,000MW and the 139MW of battery capacity taking part in the first auction responded.
Initially just low frequency Dynamic Containment was procured, but in November 2021 this was expanded to include high frequency services too.
