Octopus Energy has surged past the two million customers mark, offering the milestone customer a year of free energy to celebrate.
Laura from North Yorkshire officially joined on Monday 22 February as the two millionth customer, and received a call on the following Wednesday to tell her she wouldn’t have to pay any energy bills for a year.
Max McShane, head of digital marketing at Octopus Energy, said it made him “incredibly happy” to share with Laura the news of her win, “but knowing that our prize will make a real difference to her and her family really warmed my heart”.
“With 2 million households (3.6 million accounts), we’ve built a business that’s entered the Big 6 in terms of scale by using technology to drive down costs and improve service. Using our lower cost base to deliver everyday low pricing rather than ‘tease and squeeze’ has really resonated with customers.”
Since being launched in 2015, the energy supplier has seemingly gone from strength to strength, hitting a $2 billion (£1.5 billion) valuation in December as it announced an expansion into Asia thanks to a partnership with Tokyo Gas.
In 2021, it has celebrated a number of advances including the introduction of launched a “world first” local time of use tariff that drops prices for customers when wind speeds are up, titled the Fan Club.
It also announced the creation of an entech research centre, with the Octopus Centre for Net Zero set to drive green energy technology development.
